Jet deflections in radio galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
Convincing evidence for the interaction between jets and their environments has been found inmany extragalactic radio sources. In some radio galaxies these interactions appear to cause the jet to be deflected, not completely stopped or disrupted. This paper presents a simple model which accounts for jet deflections with oblique shocks in a relativistic flow. Using the model in conjunction with measurements of jet deflection angles, it is possible to derive estimates of pre and post-shock jet speeds as well as the strength and obliquity of the shocks. The model is applied to two radio galaxies, PKS 1308−441 and 3C 277.3. A range in shock strength of 2 – 30 and jet Lorentz factors of 2 – 5 are required to explain the data for these two sources.

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملA dichotomy in the orientation of dust and radio jets in nearby low - power radio galaxies ⋆
We examine the properties of central dust in nearby quiescent and active early-type galaxies. The active galaxies are low-power radio galaxies with Fanaroff & Riley Type I or I/II radio jets. We focus on (a) the comparison of the dust distributions in the active and quiescent galaxy samples and (b) the relation between the radio jet and dust orientations. Our main observational conclusions are:...
متن کاملX-ray Detection of the Inner Jet in the Radio Galaxy M84
During the course of an investigation of the interaction of the radio galaxy M84 and its ambient cluster gas, we found excess X-ray emission aligned with the northern radio jet. The emission extends from the X-ray core of the host galaxy as a weak bridge and then brightens to a local peak coincident with the first detectable radio knot at 2>5 from the core. The second radio knot at 3>3 is brigh...
متن کاملA giant radio jet ejected by an ultramassive black hole in a single - lobed radio galaxy
We report the discovery of a very unusual, highly asymmetric radio galaxy whose radio jet, the largest yet detected, emits strongly polarized synchrotron radiation and can be traced all the way from the galactic nucleus to the hot spot located ∼ 440 kpc away. This jet emanates from an extremely massive black-hole (> 109M⊙) and forms a strikingly compact radio lobe. No radio lobe is detected on ...
متن کاملRadio Identification of the X-ray Jet in the Z=4.3 Quasar Gb 1508+5714 C. C. Cheung
The recent discovery of an X-ray jet in the z=4.3 quasar GB 1508+5714 by Yuan et al. (astro-ph/0309318) and Siemiginowska et al. (astro-ph/0310241) prompted a search for its radio counterpart. Here, we report the successful discovery of faint radio emission from the jet at 1.4 GHz using archival VLA data. Possible interpretations of the X-ray jet as synchrotron or inverse Compton emission off t...
